GENERAL QUESTIONS

WHAT EXACTLY DOES CKF DO?

As a national nonprofit, the Chris Klug Foundation’s mission is three-fold: 1) to REGISTER more Americans as organ donors; 2) to EDUCATE on the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation; and 3) to INSPIRE those whose lives have been touched by donation in some way.

At its core, CKF is committed to increasing the organ donor registration rate nationwide and, by doing so, saving the lives of those currently awaiting a lifesaving transplant.

Through our wide range of programming, CKF reaches tens of thousands of people a year, equipping them with the facts of organ donation so they can make educated decisions when it comes to end-of-life care.

WHY DOESN'T CKF FACILITATE TRANSPLANTS?

In the United States, the evaluation and allocation of all deceased-donor organs and tissue for transplantation is done through federally mandated nonprofits, called organ procurement organizations (OPOs). There are 58 OPOs in the U.S. and each one is responsible for facilitating the procurement and subsequent transplantation of viable organs in a specific state or region. All OPOs in the country are members, by law, of the national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), which is managed by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). Once an OPO receives consent from a deceased donor’s family, it works closely with UNOS to identify the best candidates for the available organs and coordinates with the hospital, transplant center and surgical team to ensure these organs are transferred safely to the designated recipient.

Since CKF isn’t legally classified as an OPO, we cannot participate in any type of organ, eye or tissue allocation whatsoever. However, this doesn’t negatively impact our work or prevent us from reaching our goals in any way. In fact, it allows us to dedicate more of our time and effort into diversifying our programs and focus more on increasing organ donor registration nationwide.
