Frequently Asked Questions -

General Questions -

  • As a national nonprofit, the Chris Klug Foundation’s mission is three-fold:

    1. To INSPIRE individuals to learn about organ, eye, and tissue donation.

    2. To EDUCATE on the importance of organ, eye, and tissue donation.

    3. To REGISTER more Americans as organ, eye, and tissue donors.

At its core, CKF is committed to increasing the organ donor registration rate nationwide and, by doing so, saving the lives of those currently awaiting a lifesaving transplant.

Through our wide range of programming, CKF reaches hundreds of thousands of people each year, equipping them with the facts about organ, eye, and tissue donation so they can make educated decisions about registering.

  • In the United States, the evaluation and allocation of all deceased-donor organs and tissue for transplantation are done through federally mandated nonprofits called organ procurement organizations (OPOs). There are 58 OPOs in the U.S.; each is responsible for facilitating the procurement and subsequent transplantation of viable organs in a specific state or region.

By law, all OPOs in the country are members of the national Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), which is managed by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). Once an OPO receives consent from a deceased donor’s family, it works closely with UNOS to identify the best candidates for the available organs, and coordinates with the hospital, transplant center, and surgical team to ensure these organs are transferred safely to the designated recipient.

Since CKF isn’t legally classified as an OPO, we cannot participate in organ, eye, or tissue allocation. However, this doesn’t negatively impact our work or prevent us from reaching our goals. It allows us to dedicate more time and effort to diversifying our programs, as well as focus on increasing organ donor registration nationwide.

  • We have lots of organ donation swag, including t-shirts, stickers, koozies, neck buffs, and sunnies! All of our swag is available free of charge. However, a monetary donation of any amount is always appreciated. You can donate HERE.
